A protest will be held this weekend, organised by UK vegan charity Viva, against the UK dairy industry as part of the charity’s anti-dairy ‘Corporate Cruelty’ campaign.
On Saturday (January 27), the charity has predicted that hundreds of people all over the UK will protest in their local towns and cities to participate in the campaign.
Viva said the purpose of the protest is to “educate members of the public about inherent cruelty in modern dairy farming” as well as to promote plant-based alternatives to dairy products.
Viva said protests will be taking place in over 100 towns and cities across the UK, including Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, London and Manchester
Campaigners will be handing out leaflets, holding placards and looking to engage in conversations with consumers about veganism.
Viva members will be stationed in Leicester Square, London, between 12:00p.m and 3:00p.m on Saturday.
Viva founder and director, Juliet Gellatley, said: “Over the past 18 months, Viva has been dedicated to exposing the secrets of the dairy industry.
“Our team has visited a wide range of farms, and sadly the picture was the same at each one: pain, cruelty and death.
“It isn’t the case that just a few farms are bad while the majority are fine; unfortunately, appalling conditions are widespread, and the cows pay the ultimate price.”
Gellatley said Viva is taking to the streets to “educate the public on what the dairy industry is really like”.
“We’ll be having frank and positive conversations with people about where their food comes from, as well as giving out vegan samples to show that they do not need to rely on this cruel, exploitative industry or compromise on taste,” she said.
Agriland has reached out to both Dairy UK and the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers (RABDF) for comment on this weekend’s protest.
