This weeks Tweeting Farmer is Dolores Harris from Cavan. She has been farming organically since 1999.
About the farm…
I have a suckler herd Aberdeen cross. The farm has been in my husband’s family for six generations of O’Briens. My husband does not farm the land and it was lying there so I decided to convert it to organic. When calves are ready for sale around November time I bring them to Drumshambo Mart in Leitrim where they have a registered organic sale. I also keep bullocks for fattening which I sell around the same time to a factory in Clones. Sometimes I have problems sourcing organic feed. I’m waiting for my organic inspection so tidying around the farm is high on the list at the moment. I also breed, buy and sell Connemaras and I’m a member of the Connemara Society.
Life on the farm…
My mornings start quite early having to feed horses and cattle, checking stock and so forth.  Right now repairs to machinery (quads, tractors, mowers) are taking place and preparing for winter is high on the list. As a woman, work on the farm is physically difficult and sometimes I have to admit to needing a man’s help. This is where good neighbours come in.
