A Status Yellow weather warning for snow and lightning is in place until 8:00p.m today (Thursday, February 24) for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Under this warning frequent heavy snow showers are expected, along with very gusty winds and a chance of frequent lightning affecting some places.

There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected, and also a chance that some vehicles and passengers could become stranded.

There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, i.e. mobile phone coverage, and that some rural communities could become cut off.

There is also a chance of injuries and danger to life from the lightning strikes, as well as damage to buildings.

Snow and lightning latest in severe weather

This snow and lightning warning is the latest in what has been a bought of severe weather across the UK recently, including back-to-back storms.

The Environment Agency has estimated that around 400 properties across the UK have been flooded as a result of these storms.

“So far we have received reports of around 400 properties having flooded over the past few days. Our thoughts go out to all those affected – flooding can and does have a devastating impact on people’s lives,” said Environment Agency flood duty manager, Dan Bond.

A severe flood warning – meaning there is a danger to life – remains in place at Wribbenhall, Bewdley, along the River Severn.

Across the UK there are also 34 active flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected and 38 active flood alerts, meaning flooding is likely.

People are advised to steer clear from swollen rivers.
