Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) has been recognised for the global impact of its dairy research by a leading scientific journal following the success of two research papers written by its staff.
The two papers were among the 100 most highly cited papers published by the Illinois-based Journal of Dairy Science (JDS) over the past three years.
This, in turn, has contributed to Web of Science ranking JDS fourth out of 60 journals for their Impact Factor in its Agriculture, Dairy and Animal Science category.
‘Low body condition predisposes cattle to lameness: An eight-year study of one dairy herd’ was co-authored by Colin Mason, SRUC’s Veterinary Centre Manager based in Dumfries.
It has been cited, among other institutions, by the University of British Columbia, Université Laval in Quebec and the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna.
Meanwhile, Prof. Richard Dewhurst, manager of Future Farming Systems at SRUC, co-authored ‘Large-scale indirect measurements for enteric methane emissions in dairy cattle’, which included research from SRUC’s Green Cow project.
The study has been cited, among other institutions around the world, by Penn State University, France’s Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA) and the Leibniz Institute in Germany.
Prof. Dewhurst said: “It’s very gratifying to have our work recognised in this way, and it is also proof that SRUC research continues to have a global impact.”
Dr. Matt Lucy from the University of Missouri, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dairy Science, said: “The quality of the science published in the journal is remarkable.”
