The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) is seeking opinions from members on trade deals with South Korea to help form its official response.
The union is asking for all responses with thoughts and information on the deal to be submitted before January 16, 2023.
Speaking on the potential success of the deal, the union said: “Meat and dairy in particular pose significant opportunities, with the NFU identifying securing access for British beef to South Korea as a priority.”
It encouraged members to read a briefing put together by an NFU team that details “how any trade agreement will affect each sector”.
The NFU is seeking inputs regarding:
- Concerns about specific imports;
- Information about specific farming practices;
- Opportunities to send agri-food products;
- Any other views surrounding trade with South Korea.
‘Strong potential’
The Department for International Trade (DIT) is seeking input on which aspects of current trading agreements with South Korea it should look to improve or amend.
The appeal was launched on December 9, 2022, and the department said the consultation will close on February 2, 2023.
The NFU aims to give its response before the DIT consultation closes.
“There is strong potential for meat and dairy products to the region, particularly for pork where we already have market access,” the union said.
“South Korea has a population of 57.1 million and a GDP/capita of $34,757 compared to the UK with a population of 67 million and a GDP/capita of $47,334.40.”
