The chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down Council has taken time out of his busy schedule to visit the site of Newry Show 2025.
Councillor Pete Byrne commented: “This is an amazing location: it provides the most picturesque views of the both the Mourne Mountains and the Ring of Gullion. Both are areas of outstanding natural beauty.”
He also expressed the recognition of Newry, Mourne and Down Council members for the immense contribution that farming and food make to the local economy.
“Newry Show uniquely encapsulates the beauty of our rural areas and the fact that our countryside is at the heart of so many thriving industries,” he said.
“It is for this reason that the council has always supported the show. It stands for everything that is positive about the Newry and Mourne area.”
This year’s show will be hosted by Robert and Helen Cartmill at Derrywilligan Road, close to the village of Bessbrook. The all-important date is Saturday, June 28.
Newry Show
While visiting the site, Byrne had the opportunity of catching-up with the dairy farming couple and Newry Show chairperson, Brian Lockhart.
Moving to the Derrywilligan Road has been a tremendous success story for Newry Show.
Lockhart explained: “The location is extremely picturesque: it is also very well serviced in meeting the needs of the show.
“Those participating in the livestock classes and the trade exhibitors have all the space they need. The parking facilities at Derrywilligan Road are also excellent. And we want to build on all of this for the future.”
“Newry Show attracts livestock breeders from very county in Ireland, trade exhibitors from many parts of Ireland and members of the general public from the Newry area and beyond.”
Newry Show moved to its current location in 2023. The past two years have seen the event enjoy tremendous weather.
“Tremendous weather cannot be guaranteed every year. |But what is very evident since Covid is the growing demand from the general public to find out about more about the food they eat and, specifically, how it is produced,” Lockhart said.
“What has been very obvious over the past few years is the increasing number of family groups coming to the show. And, again, want to build on all of this for the future.”
The show chairperson also spoke of the continuing community support for the show since it moved to the Derrywilligan Road site.
“We have had a tremendously successful two years at the Bessbrook site and we want to build in this in 2025,” he said.
“Community support for Newry Show has never been greater. And, again it’s case of developing this theme into the future.
“The event is a tremendous shop window for the farming and food industries throughout our catchment areas.
“I would like to thank Newry, Mourne and Down Council for their continuing support of Newry Show,” he added.
