The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) has confirmed that it is continuing to “make enquiries” in relation to an incident on a farm in Co. Antrim yesterday (August 7).

According to a death notice published by DJM Robinson & Son Funeral Directors, “much loved father” of three, Noel Boyd, died suddenly yesterday in Broughshane as a result of a “farm accident”.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has also confirmed that it “attended the scene of a sudden death of a man in the Lisnamurrikan Road in Broughshane on Wednesday August 7”.

It is the third farm related tragedy in Northern Ireland in the last four weeks.

Farm incident

Harold Andrew Gilmore whose family described him as a “devoted father” of eight daughters and also a “cherished grandfather” died last month on his farm on Fintona Road in Dromore, Co. Tyrone.

According to a death notice published by Armstrong Funeral Directors and Memorials, Harold Andrew Gilmore, had died “tragically on his farm” on Saturday, July 20.

Separately the PSNI confirmed that a man aged in his 50s had died after an incident on a farm in the vicinity of Lurgan, Co. Armagh on Friday, July 26.

The HSENI had also indicated that it was notified of an incident on a farm in the Lurgan area on the Friday evening.

HSENI

Last month Robert Kidd, chief executive of HSENI, had highlighted at the launch of Farm Safety Week, that farming “is an integral part of the economy and the community in Northern Ireland”.

However he also warned that it had “the poorest safety record of any industry in Northern Ireland”.

Kidd said while attitudes and behaviours around farm safety and mental health were changing there were also families mourning those they had lost in the industry and thousands of farmers “suffering every day with long term ill-health, serious injuries, or poor mental health”.

“We want to see an end to lives lost and farm families left in pieces due to a needless farm accident,” Kidd said.
