The Massey Ferguson 5M tractor range has been updated and is now topped out by a 145hp model, the 5M.145, but it still uses the same 4.4L AGCO Power unit as its siblings.
The purpose of the 5M models is to provide a good quality mid-range tractor that doesn’t overstretch the budget of the less than massive farm, and it is in this segment where Massey Ferguson has always been strong.
The latest range is designed to be quiet, comfortable and fuel efficient and one of the approaches taken is to offer maximum torque at just 1,500 revs, the top model producing 560Nm at this engine speed.
Yard and loader work
Massey Ferguson also boasts of the range’s compact dimensions and compatibility with all its loaders, ensuring that it will happily function handling products and materials in addition to having the power for field operations.
The hydraulics have a 58l/min pump at their heart or a 100l/min unit may be chosen as an option. A separate 38l/min pump supplies the tractors internal services.
As a further option, a 2,500kg front linkage is available with suspension for comfort, and they are capable of towing 28t at full road speed.
The need for power
The 5M series now includes six tractors in all, ranging from 95hp up to the 145hp, all are dressed in the latest MF family styling, which features a diamond grey cab with new sabre decals.
Although 145hp might be considered more than ample on a mid-range stock tractor, modern slurry tankers with macerators and booms will happily absorb whatever is on offer, so when not spreading, it will be able to go mowing at a considerable rate of knots.
In line with the increased power the fuel tank is now 24% larger, offering a long operating period between fills, especially on the smaller models.
Dyna-4 standard on 5M models
The well tested Dyna-4 transmission is now fitted as standard. It provides clutchless shifting on a 16+16 box, which may be enhanced by the Auto Drive, which allows automatic shifting in Power or Eco mode. Top speed is now 40kph.
Massey Ferguson’s smart farming package is also available on all the tractors. This provides everything from auto guidance to field recording with ISOBUS compatibility.
The new models will be available from early next year and may be seen at LAMMA 2025 in January.
