The Portwest All-Ireland Welly throwing competition takes place throughout the three days of the National Ploughing Championships and is in aid of the Ratheniska Ladies Football and Laois Youth Cafe.
As well as the fun in taking part there will be daily prizes from Portwest. The competition takes place from 12-4pm and is located beside the Hunt Chase/Vintage area.
For just a couple of euro contestants can avail of three throws and the chance to win a trip to Wellington in the UK for the International Welly Throwing Championships. The volunteers from the football club will be present on each day throughout the arena and all donations will go to a good cause.
Owen Hughes, managing director of Portwest, said the welly-throwing competition is great for creating a buzz about the brand. When asked for the motivation behind the competition Owen explained: “We supply a huge amount of farming workwear and we wanted to engage with an event that would relate to what we do but was also a bit of fun.”
Every year a local charity or non-profit organisation is chosen to benefit from the proceeds of the competition. “The local societies are great for getting people to take part. In 2012 and 2011 respectively the St Vincent de Paul Gorey and in Athy were the company’s chosen charity partners.”
Despite the good weather Portwest is currently selling out of the new Sealtex raingear and Hughes comments how bad weather means good business for the company.
“We have a great spot here today so people are in a good mood and sales are good however in the bad weather we would experience massive interest in our workwear,”said Hughes.
