On one of the hottest days of the year so far, Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) members and staff set off to tackle 870 miles as part of its WalkWales Challenge.
Every year FUW staff and members join together and organise an event that brings them together and helps raise money for the President’s charity – this year for the Farming Community Network (FCN) and the Alzheimer’s Society Cymru.
A total of 50 walkers, with representatives from each of the union’s 11 county branches and Aberystwyth headquarters, set off on the coastal path.
The group took different routes around Aberystwyth and ended the challenge at the FUW head office at Penrhyncoch for a hog roast on Friday, June 21.
“I’m so proud of the team for going the extra mile to boost the fund,” said FUW president Glyn Roberts, who also took part in the walk.
“It was a very hot day and they did a fantastic job as always. In our places of work, we’ve faced some pretty low-points in the last few years.
“Bovine TB, price volatility and uncertainty about our future post-Brexit, all put a strain on our resolve and will have many feeling stressed and under immense pressure, which is why we continue to keep the spotlight on mental health and raising money for these great charities,” he added.
The FUW has now raised more than £32,000 across Wales, which will be presented to the Farming Community Network and the Alzheimer’s Society at the National Eisteddfod in August.
“I’m really happy with the event, collectively the team have over 600 miles under their belts. It was tough, hot and there were a few sore feet at the end of the day – but it was worth it,” said organiser FUW policy officer Charlotte Priddy.
Funds are still coming in and the money goes to two great charities. A big thank you to all of the team and Rhosyn Farm produce for the fantastic pulled pork rolls to finish off the day.
The WalkWales Challenge fund will be open until the end of July. To contribute you can contact the county offices or online at: fuw.org.uk/giving.
