Firefighters in the Bridport area of Dorset have been working to put out a large barn fire along Pymore Lane, which has been closed to traffic due to smoke and emergency appliances in attendance.
Teams from Bridport and Beaminster fire stations were called out to the incident around 1:01a.m this morning (Thursday, August 18), bringing with them both pumps and a water carrier.
The barn, which had roughly 900t of hay stored inside, was fully involved in fire when emergency services arrived at the scene.
After seeing this, an assistance message was sent to increase the amount of pumps. Help came from Charmouth, Maiden Newton and Dorchester fire stations.
Crews used multiple main lines to bring the fire under control and prevent spread to adjacent buildings – one with solar panels on the roof – and to protect a cattle shed with livestock inside.
After undertaking a watching brief, the fire, due to the amount of hay inside, was kept under a controlled burn.
After this, Bridport Fire Station said, another assistance message was sent requesting a manitou digger from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to help remove the hay from the barn so that the remains of the fire could be extinguished.
This help came at 6:00a.m.
It is unknown if the fire is yet fully extinguished. As of this morning, the incident was expected to take up another few hours of the day.
