SPAR Northern Ireland is recalling several chicken products because listeria monocytogenes has been found in the products after a food alert was issued by the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA)
According to the FSA, the food alert covers three specific products:
Food alert
The FSA said the presence of listeria monocytogenes can lead to individuals experiencing symptoms which are similar to flu.
These can include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.
The FSA also stated that in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.
“Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems,” the agency added.

The FSA has also confirmed that Spar Northern Ireland is recalling the three cooked chicken products identified in the food alert.
“Point of sale notices will be displayed where the products are sold.
“These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products,” it added.
The agency has advised consumers that if they have bought the chicken products then they should not eat them.
Instead it said the products should be returned to where they were bought for a full refund and any customers with queries or concerns should contact Spar customer services.

Last month the supermarket group Asda recalled its hot and spicy chicken breast slices because of an incorrect use-by date.
The product, pack size 160g, had been packaged with the wrong date of May 30. Asda recalled the product and explained to customers why it had been recalled.
According to the FSA it issues product recall information notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food.
