Last week (Monday, August 7) saw the latest monthly Cambridge Machinery Sales auction take place at the Cheffins Auctioneers’ sale grounds in Sutton, Cambridge (England).
These monthly sales can attract up to 3,000 lots, including tractors, construction equipment and farm and horticultural machinery, though the August installment is typically less busy.
Tractors, plant and machinery offered for sale are consigned from private vendors, dealers (UK and overseas), local authorities and national finance companies.
Cheffins has over 30,000 registered buyers worldwide and lots are regularly sold to Spain, Ireland, Germany, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and North Africa.
Over 60% of items are sent for export; over 20% of sales during the past 12 months have been to developing countries.
On Monday of last week there was a wide and varied selection of different tractors on offer – classic and modern units. The live ‘drive through’ American-style auction kicked off in the morning and wound down later into the afternoon.

German classic: This 1989 Deutz-Fahr DX6.10 (with air-conditioning and front weights) was a one-owner tractor. It had just 2,127 “genuine” hours on the clock. It sold for a deserving £11,900
This 2009 Deutz-Fahr M640 (with brackets for a Quicke front loader) had just 2,141 hours on the clock. It sold for just £14,500
This tired-looking 1992 Massey Ferguson 390 (with a front loader) had 5,868 hours on the clock. It sold for £6,500
This 1988 Massey Ferguson 398 (12-speed transmission) was a one-owner tractor from a small arable farm. It had 5,116 hours on the clock. It sold for £7,800
This 2014 Farmtrac 555 was a somewhat unusual sight at Cambridge. With just 1,314 hours showing, it sold for £7,800
Cheap horsepower: This 1994 Massey Ferguson 3670 was showing 7,162 hours on its odometer. It sold for just £4,100
This aging but intact 1990 Case IH 895XL Super was showing 8,071 hours. It sold for £4,100
Straight from a golf course: This pint-sized 2000 Renault Pales 210 had 5,012 hours on its clock. It sold for a solid £8,000
Mean, green machine: This 1986 John Deere 2850 (SG2 cab) with a Quicke front loader and 6,144 hours on the clock sold for a reasonable £7,000
Modern classic: This 1990 John Deere 3050 (‘High Lift’) was showing 8,435 hours. The hammer fell at a sale price of £6,800
This unusual, ‘open-air’ 1991 Ford 6610 (2WD) had just 1,982 hours showing on its odometer. It sold for £4,300
True blue with a Super Q: This tidy-looking Ford 5610 (Force II) had 4,563 hours on the clock. It sold for a lofty £9,000
A classic from the 1990s: This 1993 Case IH Maxxum 5130 (powershift model with air-conditioning) had 4,736 hours on the clock. It sold for £7,400
This 2004 McCormick MC135 (with air-conditioning, front suspension and weights) had 6,007 hours on the clock. It sold for a reasonable £13,800
French flair: This 1998 Renault 630RZ had 9,350 hours on its odometer. The hammer fell at a sale price of £8,800
Reworked and revamped Renault Ares: This 2007 Claas Arion 577 CIS (40kph model with air-conditioning) had 4,609 hours on the clock. It sold for £18,200
Turf tyres: This 2005 Kubota ME9000 (4WD) had 5,533 hours showing. The sale price was £8,900
Modern muscle: This 2007 Case IH Puma 180 (powershift) had 5,722 on its odometer. It didn’t sell; bidding was weak on this particular tractor
Handy farmer’s tractor: This 1999 Case IH MX100C (with a front loader) had 8,601 hours on the clock. It sold for £9,800
‘Red’ power: This 2011 Case IH Puma 155 (with a Case IH front loader) had 8,489 hours showing. The hammer fell at a sale price of £26,200
This 2011 Case IH Puma (with a Quicke Q75 front loader) had 7,217 hours on its odometer. It sold for a reasonably solid £26,200
If she’s not red, leave her in the shed: This 1997 Massey Ferguson 6160 (with front weights) was practically on row-crop wheels/tyres. Showing 3,071 hours on the clock, it sold for £9,600
A ‘classy’ Massey? Bidding topped out at just £10,200 for this 2004 Massey Ferguson 5465 with 7,157 hours showing. It didn’t sell
Scarce on the ground: This 2000 Same Rubin 135 (with front linkage) had 7,502 hours on its odometer. It sold for just £8,500
This 2003 New Holland TM190 ‘long-wheelbase’ tractor was showing 2,700 hours on its odometer. The hammer fell at a sale price of £14,100
If she’s not blue, she just won’t do: This 2012 New Holland T7.210 had 8,268 hours showing. The sale price on the day was £26,000
A reworked Case IH MX Magnum in ‘blue’ clothes: This powerful 2002 New Holland TG255 had 6,275 hours under its belt. It didn’t sell
Droop nose: This fresh-faced 2005 Massey Ferguson 5455 was showing 4,250 hours. The hammer fell at a sale price of £16,000
High-tech: This 2005 Fendt Vario tractor had over 11,000 hours clocked up. It sold for a solid £24,000
Off-farm condition: This 2002 John Deere 6920 was showing 5,709 hours and certainly needed new front tyres. It sold for just £16,000
Presentable appearance: This 2004 John Deere 6820 had a substantial 8,256 hours showing on its odometer. It sold for £17,000
Major muscle: This massive 2002 Case IH STX450 (Quadtrac) had a significant 7,677 hours recorded. It sold for a chunky £38,000
