Fonterra Brands NZ is conducting a voluntary recall of 300ml and 500ml bottles of Anchor and Pams fresh cream with a best before date of 21 January 2014.
The recall involves 8,700 bottles of fresh cream that have been distributed to retail and foodservice outlets.
Fonterra Brands NZ managing director Peter McClure said the voluntary recall is being done because quality tests have shown there may be the presence of E.Coli in some Anchor and Pams bottles of cream with the 21 January 2014 best before date.
“We are sorry for the inconvenience and concern this recall might cause but food safety and quality are our top priorities,” said McClure.
Back in August of last year Fonterra reported that a small amount of its products had been contaminated by a strain of the clostridium bacteria that can cause botulism.
At the time the New Zealand dairy co-operative had stated the contamination ws restricted to a specialist whey protein concentrate (WPC80) and has recalled the affected batches.
It subsequently turned out that the scare was a false alarm.
All of this has come in the wake of the 2008 Melamine crisis in China, which had a major impact on the way Fonterra approached its business in China.
