Crowds of activists rallied by the Animal Justice Project (AJP) are outside the UK Dairy Day venue in Telford today (Wednesday, September 14) to protest the effect of dairy production on climate change.

The activists have been out with large banners and cow head-shaped placards at the UK Dairy Day venue since 8.00a.m this morning.

They are protesting the event, citing concerns that dairy production has a considerable effect on climate change due to emissions of greenhouse gases.

They have brought up an AJP ‘Expired’ campaign, which they claim revealed abuse and suffering of cows and calves during the production process.

Campaigns manager for the AJP, Ayrton Cooper, said: “If the recent Covid-19 pandemic has taught us one thing, it’s that animal products, including dairy, belong in our past.

“Cows, calves and bulls are wickedly exploited on farms, treated as commodities, all for products that are unnecessary and even linked to human cancers.

“With animal farming causing widespread animal suffering, furthering antibiotic resistance, and accelerating climate change, we are advocating for a plant-based future,” she said.

A spokesperson for UK Dairy Day told Agriland last night (Tuesday, September 13) that they were “aware that there [was] a possibility of a planned protest”. They had no further comment at that time.

UK Dairy Day

The UK Dairy Day event, located at the International Centre in Telford, draws in thousands of farmers and agricultural companies from across the UK each year.

The free-to-attend event is for anybody connected to the dairy industry as it provides an opportunity to network, share knowledge, learn and conduct business.
