The four Northern Ireland finalists from the 2025 ABP Angus Youth Challenge recently took part in a media training workshop in the Cool FM radio station in Newtownards, Co. Down.
The media session was designed to give the students professional tips and insights on digital storytelling skills that will help them share their experiences and the work they are carrying out over the next nine months.
The workshop provided the teenagers with hands-on experience in crafting engaging digital content, understanding social media algorithms, and developing compelling messages to promote their journey as ABP Angus Youth Challenge finalists.
The students were introduced to best practices in digital content creation and online safety.
The hands-on experience involves rearing their own mini herd of Angus cross cattle, and working on projects related to sustainable beef production in Northern Ireland.
Downtown Country presenter, Victoria Quinn, Cool FM’s Paulo Ross, and Bauer Media NI’s head of creative, Keith Law, provided insights into using different social media platforms to maximise engagement and storytelling impact.
The day included interactive discussions and practical content creation exercises. The students explored the use of social media platforms to present their projects effectively and were also able to craft and record audio scripts with the studio team.
The ABP Angus Youth Challenge is delivered in partnership with Certified Irish Angus. The finalists have been assigned projects ranging from animal welfare standards and engaging with young consumers about beef to food provenance and the ‘One health’ concept.
Commenting on the day, George Mullan, managing director of ABP in Northern Ireland said, “As the next generation steps up to shape the future of farming and agrifood, equipping them with the tools to communicate is essential.
“The ABP Angus Youth Challenge helps young people learn farming skills and how to connect their work with a wider non-farming audience,” he added.
