Four cows rescued from slurry pit in Cumbria

Fire and rescue crews in Cumbria were called to free four cows on Saturday (October 16) after they had fallen into a slurry pit.

Crews from Carlisle East, Carlisle West and Wigton were called to the scene of the incident, a farm near the Biglands, around 5:25a.m Saturday morning.

On arrival they discovered four cows stuck below ground in the pit.

Using a tele-handler, specially trained animal rescue technicians successfully removed the animals.

Describing the incident on Facebook, Carlisle East Fire Station said:

In attendance, crews discovered that four cows had fallen approximately two metres through the entrance to a slurry pit, and were stuck below ground.

“Crews utilised farm machinery to remove the slurry from the pit, and all four cows were successfully brought to safety by specially trained animal rescue technicians, using animal rescue strops and a farm tele-handler.”
