Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) is continuing to run an initiative that seeks to highlight the “key role” auctioneers play in the Scottish red meat industry.

QMS will continue to organise a series of activities and events, working with auctioneers “up and down the country” as part of a campaign to “communicate the care and commitment which goes into the production of top-quality Scotch beef PGI [Protected Geographical Indication] and Scotch lamb PGI”.

The most recent effort at profiling auctioneers featured Primrose Beaton, head cattle auctioneer with Lawrie and Symington, based in Lanark. She outlined the importance of animal welfare and the traceability of Scotch beef.

QMS also recently profiled trainee auctioneer Ellis Mutch, who works with the ANM Group in Inverurie. He recently featured in an ad for Scotch beef which is currently being shown in cinemas around Scotland.

And last week, Colin Slessor, another auctioneer with the ANM Group – and who also featured in the BBC series ‘The Mart’ – took part in a QMS-organised ‘cook-off’, showcasing Scotch lamb at the Taste of Grampian food and drink festival.

At the upcoming Royal Highland Show (Thursday, June 20 to Sunday, June 23), auctioneers will be featured at the QMS stand.

“Our thanks go to all the auctioneers who have supported Quality Meat Scotland’s campaigns and PR activities in recent months,” said Alan Clarke, chief executive of QMS.

It is vital that the industry pulls together and that there is a concerted effort to communicate with the public to increase understanding of the hard work and dedication that exists in the different parts of our industry.

Looking to the future, Clarke also thanked all those who responded to a QMS appeal for people to get involved in the ‘Meat with Integrity’ campaign, which will be launched at the end of July.
