A butcher shop in Wales has had its own sausage creation named the ‘Champion of Champions’ at the Butcher Shop of the Year Awards in London earlier this week.
The sausage, a creation of Ela and Huw Roberts of ‘Oink Oink’ farm near Pwllheli, were one of 16 finalists from across the UK, and became the first Welsh winners of the accolade in several years.
‘Oink Oink’ had qualified to this competition by winning its Welsh equivalent: ‘Put your best sausage forward’, which was organised by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), and took place at the Royal Welsh Show earlier this year.
The product consists of Huw and Ela’s home-reared pedigree pork, plus a specially-chosen Welsh vintage cheddar from South Caernarfon Creameries.
Huw and Ela were also recently involved in a promotional event in Cardiff entitled ‘Posh Sausage Pop-Up’; an event organised by Porc.Wales (a pork-focused subdivision of HCC).
“I’m extremely happy to be here in London for the Champion of Champions competition and to have won the competition with our Welsh Pedigree pork and vintage Welsh cheddar; Welsh produce at its best,” said Ela.
Meanwhile, Kirstie Jones, market development officer with HCC, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Huw and Ela’s sausage has been crowned the Champion of Champions, and has been recognised for its high quality and local ingredients, innovation and great taste.”
