A man has been severely injured in an accident on a farm in Yorkshire, according to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The incident occurred yesterday morning (Sunday, September 23) at 10:28am in the region of West Appleton, Hornby.
According to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, crews from Richmond, Colburn and Ripon were called to the farm to assist a man who had his arm trapped in a grain auger machine.
The male was taken to hospital via ambulance with severe arm injuries, the fire service revealed.
Meanwhile, on Saturday morning (September 22) at 10:44am, another farm incident occurred in the area – this time in Middleton Tyas.
A crew from Richmond was called to reports of teenage girl trapped with her leg under a tractor bucket.
However, on the arrival of the fire brigade the girl had managed to get free.
The crew assisted the paramedic with casualty care until an ambulance arrived. The girl was then taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle.
The most common cause of serious and fatal injuries in agriculture involve moving and overturning vehicles, with machinery also a key factor, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Machinery accidents are caused by a range of factors including:
- Using a machine that is unsuitable for the task;
- Failing to follow a safe system of work;
- Unsafe methods for clearing blockages or making adjustments.
Many agricultural machines have potentially dangerous moving parts, which can cause serious or fatal injuries. Always follow Safe Stop before removing any guards, the HSE says.
