The Borderway UK Dairy Expo returned on Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 with the interbreed champion going to MAG Pandor exhibited by Laird Family and Ferme Blondin.

This annual expo was held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle and has become a key industry event for dairy farmers across the UK and Europe, regularly seeing in the region of 7,000 visitors. 

The Supreme Championship and Interbred Champion title was claimed by Mag Pando, exhibited by the Laird family and is part-owned by French breeder Ferme Blondin.

The Walnutlawn Sidekick daughter third calver was bought privately in France last year from Ferme Mag Holsteins, and is classified VG89 as a second calver.

The reserve Holstein came from Nethervalley Holsteins and S Esquierdo.

Clydeview Sidekick Matilda is also sired by Sidekick, she calved her second in January and is producing 60L/day.

Honourable mention was Riverdane Chief Lila Z, exhibited by Riverdane Holsteins.

The Holstein, Brown Swiss and Dairy Shorthorn sections of the Dairy Expo was judged by Ben Govett of Tandara Genetics.

The British Friesian section of the competition was judged by John Cousar from the Howcommon Herd.

Daniel Bacon judged the Jersey, Red and White and Ayrshire competitions.

Irish connection

There was a number of Irish breeders present over at the Borderway UK Dairy Expo, with a number placing in the Showmanship competition.

In the Mature Showmanship, Rachal Corley from Co. Monaghan placed fourth, with Becky Hynes from Co. Cork placing fourth in the Senior Showmanship.

Alexandra Beattie from Co. Westmeath placed first in the Intermediate Showmanship section and Georgie Hynes from Co. Cork placed third in the Junior Showmanship.

The Hynes family from Rathard Holsteins heifer, Panda Rita Ora RC, owned in partnership with Panda Holsteins was Champion in Class 24 – spring calf – March 1, 2023 to May 31, 2023.
